History
Located in Collier County, 157 miles south of Tampa, and 90 west of Miami, the 24 square mile island used to be inhabited by the Calusa Indians. In 1870, W.T. Collier and his family came to the island. His son, in 1896 opened the ‘Olde Marco Inn’, a 20-room hotel.
Barron G Collier, who had no relation to W.T. Collier bought most of the island in 1922. During the depression, growth was halted until 1962, when three brothers, Elliot, Robert and Frank Jr. Mackell bought the whole island with a plan to finish the development.
